Senior technology leaders from across the financial services sector gathered in London for SmartCo’s inaugural AI in Delivery Roundtable to explore how artificial intelligence is set to reshape the future of technology delivery, and whether traditional delivery models remain fit for purpose.
The invitation-only event brought together leaders from some of the industry’s most recognised and leading organisations including MUFG, Natwest, HSBC and LSEG to discuss how AI is changing technology delivery and what organisations need to do to realise its full potential.
A key theme emerged throughout the discussion: organisations have largely moved beyond questioning whether AI can create value and are now focused on how to embed it effectively at scale. While enthusiasm and investment remain high, many businesses are still working to overcome fragmented data, establish appropriate governance and adapt delivery models to unlock the full benefits of AI.
Participants agreed that the challenge is no longer whether AI can create value, but how organisations move from experimentation to repeatable, measurable outcomes. Stronger data foundations, clearer controls and new operating models were identified as critical factors in turning AI ambition into lasting business impact. The event was co-hosted by Sahar Khan, a Transformation and AI Expert in Financial Services and Callum Campbell, Head of Clients and Growth at SmartCo. The discussion was facilitated by enterprise CIO Andy Richards.
Sahar Khan, co-host of the event, said:
“We’re at a pivotal moment for delivery as a discipline. AI isn’t just changing how technology gets built, it’s forcing us to rethink how any complex change gets delivered, and the path forward is still being written. What stands out was leaders’ willingness to talk openly about what isn’t working, not just what is. That candour is exactly what we need if we’re going to shape delivery models built for what comes next, not the ones we inherited.”
The discussion included practical examples of AI already delivering benefits across financial services, including enhancing programme assurance, accelerating compliance activities, improving decision-making and supporting innovation initiatives. Participants also explored how organisations can balance rapid experimentation with the governance and controls required in highly regulated environments.
Oli Kane, Managing Director at SmartCo, added:
“Many of the delivery models we use today simply weren’t built for an AI-powered world. Technology is changing rapidly, but operating models, processes and ways of working often lag behind. The opportunity is huge, but success won’t come from technology alone. We need to bring people with us, build confidence in how AI is used and help organisations adapt to new ways of working. If we’re serious about realising AI’s potential, we need to rethink how delivery works and collaborate across the industry to shape what comes next.”
Following the success of the inaugural roundtable, SmartCo plans to host further leadership discussions, creating opportunities for senior professionals to share perspectives, tackle common challenges and explore the technologies, trends and operating models shaping the future of delivery.
